BEP souvenir card B 155 CSNS 1992 1878 $1000 Note Face Cancelled

The $1,000 United States Note (face), featured on this souvenir card, has two distinctive engraved vignettes. The first and central vignette is the portrait of DeWitt Clinton (die #1088). Clinton once served as a United States Senator, Mayor of New York City, and served three times as the Governor of New York. Charles Burt, a freelance engraver, engraved Clinton's portrait in 1870 for a fee of $650. The second vignette on the left side of the note depicts Christopher Columbus in his study(die #562). This original vignette was engraved by Henry Gugler, who was also a freelance engraver, in 1869.

The note featured on this souvenir card was originally intended as a series 1875 note, but was issued later as a series 1878 with the signatures of Allison and Gilfillan.

The foil-stamped figure and border on the card are from the World's Colombian Exposition Diploma. The Diploma was an engraved print which was presented to international exhibitors at the Colombian Exhibition held in Chicago, Illinois, in 1893. Each Diploma was individualized with the exhibitor's name and contribution using "surface printing."
