Martin Van Buren Presidential $1 BU/Uncirculated Coin with Biography Sheet and 2 Stamps.

8th President of the United States: 1837-1841

The Martin Van Buren one-dollar coin features a bust of Van Buren based on a painting by George P.A. Healy. The original painting was completed in 1864 and is the White House portrait of Van Buren. The coin was the eighth in the Presidential Dollars series, since they are issued in the order in which the Presidents served.

Van Buren was known as the "Little Magician" to describe both his short stature (5 feet 6 inches tall) and the remarkable way in which he was able to organize elections and rally support for important legislation. He helped engineer Andrew Jackson's Presidential election victory in 1828, and as Jackson's Vice President as well as in his own Presidency, he was revered for his political skills and his ability to broker deals across party lines.

Like Thomas Jefferson before him, Van Buren served as Secretary of State, Vice President, and President. The most pressing problems he faced as President were the financial panic of 1837 and Native American uprisings. To avoid both war with Mexico and the expansion of slave territory, Van Buren refused a formal request by Texas to join the Union.
